“Life is a lot like jazz, it’s best when you improvise”

George Gershwin

I never really considered myself to be a quick thinker. As a theater kid from elementary to high school, I absolutely hated doing improv. Whenever I had to think on my feet, I’d freeze. Rather than just go with the first idea that popped into my head, I would mull over all of my options.

College taught me that sometimes you don’t have time to mull over all of your options. As a Leadership Consultant, the very first workshop that I facilitated, along with a co-worker, did not go as planned. In attendance were almost twice as many participants than we planned for. To top it all off, many of the people in attendance were not there by their own volition. Nonetheless, my facilitation partner and I were able to shift some of our activities to accommodate the unexpected numbers.
